Enterprise Uniform was founded by Leroy Burgess, August 21, 1971 along with his daughter Lynne Burgess-Holmes. Leroy’s vision then was not a strategic plan or life long goal, but rather a simple desire to open a business and service his co-workers at the City of Detroit (DSR) Detroit Street Railways with their uniform needs. At that time Leroy was a City Bus Driver and the only thing he knew about uniforms was that he put one on every day when he went to work.

Like most businesses, Enterprise Uniform Co. started small but as the company’s reputation grew, Leroy, a natural salesman and born leader, recognized its positive potential in the community. Leroy took an early retirement from his City of Detroit DSR job to devote his efforts full time to Enterprise Uniform. Lynne, likewise, while completing a degree in Business Administration at WSU and holding down a job as cashier at a local grocery store all while working the second shift at Enterprise soon left the cashiers job to work full time at the fast growing Enterprise as well.

Through hard work, long hours, and sacrifice along with committed loyal and faithful customers, Enterprise soon earned the reputation for good service, quality merchandise and prompt delivery served with a smile (and a cup of coffee) per Leroy’s orders and leadership.

As a result, as time progressed… Enterprise Uniform Co. began to attract a broad variety of new accounts like…

Leroy and Lynne were even so bold as to sell over 15 EMS trucks and 30 ft fire pumping engines to the City of Detroit. Also, in a greater leap of faith, they opened a second uniform store in 1981 which was eventually sold.

Sadly, Leroy passed in 2009, but his legacy at Enterprise Uniform Company has flourished and grown under the leadership of Lynne, his partner and daughter.

Under her direction customer service, professionalism, and quality merchandise has been her driving force and goal for Enterprise Uniform Company as we reach this 50th anniversary milestone.

As Enterprise Uniform Company has evolved, our customers still remain the most important asset for our success.

The 1982-1983 “Made to Measure” highlighted Enterprise Uniform Company in their trade magazine as being successful over 41 years. They went on to state “Enterprise Uniform Company customers share Burgess’s pride of accomplishment as Black Entrepreneurs and applaud their success as a solid uniform retailer in a highly competitive market.”
